APPROVAL has been granted for a 172-unit housing development at Ballymacool in Letterkenny.
The €50 million development was approved by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage earlier this week.
The application was moved from the planning stage into pre-construction after Donegal County Council granted Part 8 planning approval in September 2025.
The development will be a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and maisonettes, and two, three, four and five-bedroom houses.
It will also include ten two-bedroom independent living houses and one five-bedroom group home with on-site HSE support.
Welcoming the decision by the Department of Housing, Local Government, Donegal Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue said: “This is hugely positive news for Letterkenny and the North West.
“This development will help address the ever-increasing demand for houses in the town, while also helping to stabilise house prices.
“This housing project will be constructed on a greenfield site that is owned by Donegal County Council.
“It will be delivered in two phases – 100 units will be completed in 2027, with the remaining 72 being built in 2028.
“The construction of the development will provide a significant boost to local employment and the regional construction sector.”
