Appeal for donations as asylum seekers due to arrive

A support group set up to assist asylum seekers is continuing to appeal for donations of sanitary goods.

Hundreds of items have already been donated ahead of the arrival of individuals and families. They are due to take up residence in former
student accommodation along the Port Road within days.

The Donegal Asylum Seekers Support Group recently put out a call for items including soap, shower gel, razors, shampoo, toothpaste and
toothbrushes, nappies, wipes as well as all varieties of feminine products.

The response has been huge but according to volunteer Finnian O’Donnell further help is needed.

“We held a Zoom call recently and talked about things like period poverty. From that we decided to put out an appeal for items such as
shower gels, tampons, all sanitary items really.

“The response has been excellent, for example we had someone hand us €100 while a second person gave us €120 in toiletries.

“The general public has been very generous to date and it shows the real sense of community and inclusion that exists out there. What it
also does is overshadow the minority of racism that has unfortunately reared its head.

“We are grateful to everyone who has helped and if anyone else wants to make a donation then we will gladly accept whatever have.”
