Aontú representative ‘shellshocked’ at reports that residential unit to close

Donegal Aontú representative Mary T Sweeney says she is absolutely shellshocked at reports that the Supervised Residential Unit (SRU) in Carndonagh is to close.

The unit, housed in an old convent, provides residential and outreach services for patients experiencing mental health difficulties.

“I am absolutely shellshocked to hear that this service is allegedly being shut down,” Ms Sweeney said.

“It’s a service that is desperately needed in Donegal where we are seeing a rise in people increase in suicides and people presenting with mental health difficulties.

“It is an expansion of services that we need, not closing one that is doing such sterling work”.

The Letterkenny based Aontu member said she plans to write to the Saolta Group for immediate clarification on this issue.

“The Minister for Health needs to be challenged on this,” she said.

“He simply cannot be allowed to stand over the closure of a unit that is so vital. He has to account for this baffling decision”.
