Anti-Ukranian graffiti hurtful – Councillor

LETTERKENNY Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh has called on those daubing anti-Ukrainian graffiti around the town to stop, pointing out that it is very hurtful to people who have already come through so much hurt.

Speaking to the Donegal News after a gate near Sentry Hill was graffitied with a crude message, Cllr Kavanagh thanked who ever had promptly painted over the graffiti.

“It was done on Saturday evening/night sometime as it was not there on Saturday afternoon. The people doing this need to cop themselves on. I would call on people who see this happening to report it to gardai,” he said.

“I know of a family here who lost loved ones in the bombing of Kyiv. They were very upset by the graffiti which appeared around Letterkenny. This is causing upset to people who are already suffering. People who do not want to be here but are because of the circumstances in their own country. This is mindless stuff.”

Cllr Kavanagh has a motion before today’s Letterkenny/Milford Municipal District meeting calling on the council to put in place a policy to deal with graffiti.

He pointed out that there was a cost to the whole Tidy Towns effort and a cost to the council.

“They have to use resources to clean it up and there is a financial cost to clean it,” he added.
