PROPOSALS for the development of a new Surgical Hub at Sligo University Hospital have been met with strong criticism from councillors, with one describing the move as a “kick in the teeth to the people of Donegal.”
As part of the current programme for Government, there was an expectation that an additional Surgical Hub would be established for the north west, with many anticipating it would be located at Letterkenny University Hospital.
However, during Tuesday’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum, Donegal councillors were left shocked when it was revealed that the proposed development would instead be located in Sligo.
Regional Executive Officer, Tony Canavan, explained that the decision to place the Surgical Hub in Sligo was made based on what was deemed the best access for patients in the North West. He confirmed that the HSE had decided to proceed with the business case for Sligo on this basis.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle strongly disagreed with this explanation, stressing that the decision would force patients from across Donegal to travel long distances to access healthcare services.
He described the decision as a “kick in the teeth to the people of Donegal.”
The Letterkenny councillor also expressed concern that this decision would make it even more challenging for LUH to attract staff and fill vacancies.
Cllr Declan Meehan voiced his agreement with Cllr McMonagle’s concerns, adding to the frustration among Donegal representatives.
Cllr Ciaran Brogan, the current chair of the Regional Health Forum, also questioned Mr. Canavan about the decision. He asked who had made the final call to propose Sligo as the location for the new Surgical Hub.
Mr. Canavan confirmed that it had ultimately been his decision.
While speaking cautiously due to his position as chair, Cllr Brogan shared his own disappointment with the decision, aligning himself with the concerns expressed by his fellow councillors.
