Charlie McClafferty has thrown his hat in the ring to contest the Letterkenny/Milford area in the forthcoming local elections bringing to 21 the number of candidates.
The news comes less than a month before the formal confirmation of candidates four weeks before the polling date of Friday, May 2.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Mr McClafferty said that he had taken the decision after sounding out local supporters in recent weeks.
Initially, the well-known Churchill businessman had sought the Fine Gael nomination only to withdraw his name at the eleventh hour leaving the weay clear for outgoing Cllr Noel McBride, Letterkenny Town Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh and Grace Boyle.
“I was told by Fine Gael headquarters that I would not get through convention so I was left with very little choice,” he said.
The following is a list of those who have declared in the Letterkenny/Milford electoral area: Ciaran Brogan, James Pat McDaid, John Watson, Liam Blaney (all FF), Noel McBride, Jimmy Kavanagh, Grace Boyle (FG), Mick Quinn, Gerry McMonagle (SF), Christy Galligan, Siobhan McLauglin (Lab), Billy Banda (PBP) and independents Charlie McClafferty, Donal Cullen, Peter Cutliffe, Ian McGarvey, Michael McBride, John O’Donnell, Tom Crossan, Paschal Blake, and David Fisher.
