Almost 200 mattresses collected during amnesty

Some of the discarded bedding collected on Mattress Amnesty Day in Letterkenny.

A TOTAL of 190 mattresses were collected for recycling during the Mattress Amnesty Day in Letterkenny last month on what was the first day of a new national initiative.

“We were delighted with the number of household mattresses collected during the Mattress Amnesty Day in Letterkenny,” says Suzanne Bogan, Waste Awareness Officer in Donegal County Council.

“This was the first time that we held an Amnesty Day such as this in Donegal and to see this type of response is very positive. We are now hosting a number of additional days during September in different areas across the county. This is a great opportunity for households to dispose of old mattresses free of charge in a proper way and we are asking that no more than three mattresses are disposed of per vehicle and that mattresses are dry and clean.”

Mattress Amnesty Days will take place on Saturday, September 8 from 9am to noon in Stranorlar Recycling Centre and from 2pm to 5pm in Laghey Recycling Centre. On Saturday, September 15 from 9am to 12pm in Carndonagh Recycling Centre and 2pm to 5pm in Milford Recycling Centre and on Saturday, September 22 from 8.30am to 2.30pm in Dungloe Recycling Centre.

Suzanne Bogan is urging the public to avail of these Mattress Amnesty Days in each of these areas.

“This initiative is funded under the national Anti-Dumping Initiative and is being implemented by Donegal County Council in association with WERLA and it is great way for households to dispose of their old mattresses free of charge in their local Recycling Centres and we would urge households to use this opportunity dispose to their old mattresses in this way.”
