DONEGAL is to set to lose a TD if the recommendations of the Constituency Commission which is due to report to government next month are implemented.
If the recommendations are accepted Ballyshannon and Bundoran and surrounding areas could be transferred to Leitrim.
Donegal’s two electoral constituencies could be merged into one with the number of TD’s reduced from six to five.
As part of plans to cut the number of TD’s in the Dáil from 166 to 158, there will be wholesale changes to boundaries, with Dublin, Munster and Connacht-Ulster each losing three seats and Leinster outside Dublin gaining one.
Labour Senator Jimmy Harte welcomed the proposed new boundary changes reported.
“According to the reports in the media Donegal will be a five seater at the next General Election. This is part of the Government Reform and it is as promised by the Programme for Government,” he said.
“The areas in the Finn Valley valley have for years been split by sucessive changes. The proposed new constituency will give voters there a wider choice. I look forward to the publication of the commision Report in June,” he said.
