DONEGAL County Councillor David Alcorn has been cleared of allegations of financial irregularities relating to travel expenses.

In a statement released this afternoon (Wednesday) Cllr Alcorn of Fianna Fáil claims he was treated in a ‘disgraceful’ manner by the local authority who took 10 months to investigate the anonymous claims, while it took the Standards in Public Office Commission a few weeks to decide the alleged breaches were ‘groundless and did not warrant investigation’.

“I am baffled as to why it took Donegal County Council 10 months to investigate this matter and then for the council to decide to refer the matter to SIPO on June 21st , while it just took SIPO a few short weeks to decide that the entire file was without basis, that the breaches referred to by Donegal County Council were groundless and that the anonymous complaints made against Cllr Alcorn did not warrant any investigation.

“I am publically demanding an explanation from Donegal County Council as to their conduct on this matter and why I was subjected to this treatment at their hands over the past 10 months and indeed  how they delayed for days to inform me of the decision already taken by SIPO,” he added.
