Advice to drivers after motorist hits deer

Gardaí have issued advice to drivers after a motorist collided with a deer.

The incident occurred on the N15 on October 25 at 10pm, when the motorist had been travelling from Ballybofey to Donegal Town.

The motorist was not injured.

A garda spokesperson said: “We wish to remind all drivers to drive with caution as the deer ‘Rutting’ season takes place between late September and early to mid-November. Motorists should be extra vigilant at dawn and dusk hours when deer are most active, particularly in high risk areas such as woodlands and mountain areas.

“Road users should reduce speed when they see a warning sign and when travelling on country roads in particular. Stay alert.

“If you see a deer ‘dip your headlights’ as the full beam may cause the deer to freeze. If a deer has crossed in front of your vehicle, be aware that others may follow. Never swerve as you could hit another obstacle or oncoming vehicle.

“Always expect the unexpected when behind the wheel and be always prepared to stop.”
