ABBEY Vocational School’s Gaelic football trophy famine is over.

The Donegal town school had to go back to the school days of Karl Lacey and company for their last success – until Wednesday that is, when an eight-goal salvo saw them defeat Pobal Scoil Cloich Cheann Fhaola in the Donegal Under 14 ‘A’ schools final at wintry Gweedore.

Pauric O’Donnell’s side had plenty of marksmen: Jack Keaney scored 2-4 in a Man-of-the-Match performance; the lively Eoin Slevin netted a lethal hat-trick; while Shaun Meehan pitched in with 2-2.

Against the stiff Atlantic breeze at the impressive facility at the grounds of Pobal Scoil Gaoth Dobhair, Abbey held a two-point interval lead. However, their shape, fluency and flair left them for a time at the start of the second half – and it wasn’t until the final ten minutes that they took the decisive steps to glory.

Three times in the closing stages they found the net, with Keaney, Slevin and Meehan all getting goals in that period that crushed PCC’s hopes of taking the Cup back the short distance into Falcarragh.
