IT seems a long time ago now but back in the deepest days of Covid – a time of isolation when on the run into Christmas, the festive season was all so different.
With schools closed, there was no chance for the children to get together. There was no carol singing. No Christmas plays.
But when the schools returned, the staff and children at Scoil Mhuire gan Smál in Letterkenny came up with a special initiative.
The classes of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes and their teachers turned the top floor of the school into a Winter Wonderland and the younger classes were invited up to see the transformed hallways.

Jack, Elizabeth, Eabha, Blaithin and Stephanie in the school’s Winter Wonderland.
They got candy sticks and their picture taken and enjoyed the normal way of celebrating Christmas.
Five years on and the Winter Wonderland was such a success that it is still going strong and growing every year.
Teacher Caoimhe Ward told the ‘Donegal News’ this week that the winter wonderland is a basis for exhibiting the children’s art.
It’s a chance for them to express themselves on the walls of the corridors and the display has expanded every.
The school’s Parents Association has also helped out every year with the purchases of Christmas lights and extra decorations.
