CHRISTMAS came early for a Letterkenny man living in horrendous conditions after a “Good Samaritan” provided him with a new mobile home ahead of the winter.
For 15 years, Brendan McCauley lived in a mobile home with no electricity and no cooking or cleaning facilities in the Glebe area of Letterkenny.
With his living conditions severely deteriorating over time, rats began invading the place he called home.
Turning to Donegal County Council for help, Mr McCauley, who is currently claiming job seeker’s allowance, submitted an application for a demountable dwelling four years ago.
In January 2021, he received a letter of approval from the council.
It read: “I refer to your application to this Council for the provision of a Demountable Dwelling.
“I am pleased to inform you that your application has been provisionally approved subject to availability and suitability of site.”
However, three years on, Mr McCauley is still waiting and in July this year, he made one last plea to Donegal County Council for help and his story featured on the front page of the Donegal News.
However, he said this plea for help fell on deaf ears.
“I just got the feeling they didn’t want to know,” Mr McCauley said.
Left fearing another winter in the hell hole, Mr McCauley received life changing news last week when he was contacted by a Good Samaritan and offered a new abode.
“I am over the moon,” he told the Donegal News.
“Now I can shower and I can make dinner.
“I don’t know myself now.
“It doesn’t take much to be happy,” he said.
