A family holiday with a difference for Moya Brennan

But this isn’t just like any other family trip, apart from the fact that they are spending the weekend together at the world famous festival, Moya and her family will also be performing.

Billed as Moya Brennan & Family, the group will perform Moya’s usual repertoire on the Croissant Neuf field in a circus tent completely powered by solar energy in the Green Field area of the festival on Saturday, June 23 from 4 to 5.30pm.

Moya (vocals and harp) will be backed on cello by her husband Tim, Paul will switch between fiddle, bodhrán and keys while Aisling will play bouzouki, guitar and whistle. Aall three will also support Moya with backing vocals.

As a very special treat Moya’s daughter Aisling will also perform a solo, playing her unique rendition of the Dire Straits hit Romeo & Juliet.

Tim said the family is spending a full week, travelling to the festival this Tuesday, where they will stay in a caravan on site for the duration of the festival.

“We’ve played together on various occasions, but this is certainly the biggest gig to date and our very first together in the UK,” he said.

“We decided to make a week out of it so we can go and soak in the whole atmosphere and, fingers crossed, the good weather. A lot of our friends are also performing at the festival, from The Hothouse Flowers to U2, so who knows we might catch up with them, as well.

“It’s certainly a family holiday with a difference, but partly it’s also pushing the kids out of the nest and getting them out there,” he laughed.

“The site we are staying is totally eco friendly, so that should also be a very interesting experience,” said Tim.

The festival organisers invited the family to perform at the festival and they will stay in a luxurious caravan on site.

Any other teenagers would maybe shy away from being seen in public with their parents, Moya’s children didn’t need to be asked twice to play music on one of the world’s most popular festivals, she said.

“Both Aisling and Paul definitely want to work in music full-time and Aisling is currently doing a course in music, film and sound technology.

“They don’t mind playing with us at all. Like myself, they grew up playing music with the family all the time and so we’re now really looking forward to performing at Glastonbury together,” said Moya.

Anyone who has ever had the privilege of seeing some of the next generation of the Brennan clan performing in Leo’s Tavern, Meenaleck on special occasions knows how talented they all are.
