DONEGAL goalkeeper Gavin Mulreany says that he’s going to do everything he can to compete with Shaun Patton for the number one jersey as he continues to impress between the sticks.
The St Naul’s clubman is getting the nod as the number one in the absence of Patton, who is currently recovering from an injury sustained last term.
Mulreany appears to be making the most of the opportunity that’s been given to him at present, with his free-taking and ability to kick off both feet proving to be an asset to the side so far. He’s providing some healthy competition for when the Letterkenny native returns to full fitness.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Mulreany stated that he’s not just content to be the number 16 but understands the quality that Patton brings to the important position.
“Listen, 100 percent. I’ve said this over and over, I think Shaun is probably the best goalkeeper in the country. Now that I have a chance I’m not looking to just keep the jersey warm for him.
“It’s probably a conversation for later down the line but I’m going to do everything that I can. As I said, Shaun is an incredible goalkeeper and I wouldn’t be disheartened if he did replace me because I know how good he is.”
Jim McGuinness’s side were pleased to get two points on the board last weekend but their attention turns quickly to the visit of Kerry to Ballyshannon this Sunday.
In what will be a repeat of last July’s All-Ireland Football Final, the Donegal goalkeeper said that it is a tough challenge for the side but added that it’s one they’re eagerly awaiting.
“That’ll be another massive test for us, it’s just another game for us to look forward to. Considering how the game went last year, we’ll be up for it and they’ll be up for it too.
“We beat them in Kerry last year so they’d love to come up and beat us here too so it’s another game to look forward to.”
