A MESSAGE in a bottle which was found washed up on Rutland Island last week dates back almost 40 years.
The discovery was made by 12-year-old Michael Gallagher who was out on a stroll when he spotted the mysterious bottle.
Curiously examining his find, he noticed a letter inside which was wrapped in cling film.
Set adrift from the neighbouring island of Inishfree, the hunt began for the author.
Using the power of social media, staff working on the Arranmore Ferry called on their followers for assistance.
“Let’s use the power of Facebook to help Michael find out who wrote this letter and more importantly, what year,” a spokesperson said.
Soon, the eagerly awaited update followed.
“Contact has been made and the bottle was tossed into the seat 39 years ago,” a comment under the appeal read.
“Helen O’Sullivan and friends were staying up on Inishfree back in 1986 and were stuck on the island for five days due to bad weather.
“There is always a story behind a message in a bottle.
“Michael is delighted with his find and that he can have his own wee story to tell about his memories of Rutland in years to come.”
