ALMOST 900 trees have been handed out to groups throughout Donegal.
Donegal County Council distributed the trees at an event at St. Eunan’s GAA in Letterkenny on Friday.
The event, delivered in collaboration with the Burrenbeo Trust through the Hare’s Corner Project, provided a major boost for biodiversity action across the county.
Almost 9,000 native trees were distributed to over 200 successful applicants from community groups, landowners, schools, residents’ associations, sports clubs and individuals committed to enhancing local biodiversity.
Community-driven planting continues to play an important role in enriching Donegal’s landscapes, supporting wildlife and improving climate resilience. The trees handed out through this initiative will contribute to habitat creation, nature restoration and long-term environmental benefits across the county.
Priorities
This type of biodiversity action mirrors the priorities set out in the Draft County Donegal Biodiversity Action Plan, which is currently out for public consultation.
The plan outlines practical, on-the-ground measures to support nature recovery across Donegal, including increased tree planting, habitat creation and collaboration with local communities.
Donegal County Council is encouraging members of the public to visit the Council website at www.consult.donegal.ie to learn more about the draft Biodiversity Action Plan and to have their say before the consultation closes on 23rd March 2026.
The initiative supports landowners to create mini-woodlands, wildlife ponds, orchards, hedges and “Plans for Nature,” enabling practical, on-the-ground action for nature and climate.
Combined efforts
The event highlighted the combined efforts of the Donegal County Council Biodiversity Office, Culture Division and Climate Action Team, who worked together to support communities in taking meaningful steps for nature restoration and climate adaptation.
