Tent protest to highlight mica homeless risk

A PROTEST to highlight the risk of homelessness faced by mica families will be held in Donegal next month.
The ‘pitch on the pitch’ demonstration will see over 100 tents set up on Buncrana GAA pitch on November 6 to highlight the risk of mica-affected families ending up living in tents if 100 per cent redress is not secured.
Organiser Brian Quinn said: “The idea of this is grab the media’s attention and keep mica/pyrite in the headlines locally, nationally, internationally, to highlight that Donegal could have people “homeless” living in tents due to no fault of their own if 100 percent redress is not granted soon.
“Although we are hoping for a positive outcome before November 6 we are still going to prepare in case they drag it out further.”
The organisers are appealing for people to get involved and drop off points for tents will be set up around the county.
In Letterkenny tents can be dropped off at McCafferty’s and people in the Finn Valley area can call Allie Ní Ghallchóir (083-8475946) to arrange collection.
Other drop off points include Paula’s Dog Grooming in Carndonagh, Little Acorns Bookstore in Derry or call Don Mc Guinness, Buncrana (085-1518221) or Brian Quinn (085-4781280).
“If people have a tent and would like to get involved come along on the day and pitch your tent. The more tents we have the better,” added Mr Quinn.
“If people do not want their tent returned after the event, tents will be donated to non-Government funded homeless organisations.”
