THE date for 2022 Relay for Life has been confirmed as the committee is ‘delighted’ with this years event which raised over €73,000.
Relay for Life, in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, was held virtually in Donegal on June 5 and 6 and thousands of people took part throughout the county and raised a massive €73,517 for the cancer charity.
The fundraising total was announced on Tuesday by committee members and patron Daniel O’Donnell as they confirmed the event will be held next year on May 28 and 29 2022 at the LYIT.
Announcing the fundraising total, Treasurer Drew Corry said, “Thank you everybody for all your efforts.
“We are pleased to announce that the figure raised by Relay for Life is at €73,517 and we are aware there are still some fund-raising activities pending so we might see a wee rise in that before the end of our financial year in August,” said Drew.
The committee are delighted with the amount raised as it far surpassed their initial target of €25,000.
Chairperson Robert O’Connor said, “Our fundraising event exceeded all expectations immensely. “We had hoped that we would raise around €25,000 but at the event we had raised €50,000.
“I would like to thank you all for taking part in this year’s relay. It is hard to believe that May 25 and 26 2019 was the last time we relayed together.
“2020 was cancelled and this year was virtual and we have done extremely well to do what we did this year and I would like to thank all of our committee members and all the hard work they done to make the weekend such a huge success,” said Robert.
Looking ahead to next year the committee is hopeful that the event will be able to be held in the same format as pre-covid and people will be able to gather for the event.
Announcing the new dates, patron Daniel O’Donnell said, “Please God next year we will be doing the event together on May 28 and 29 2022.
“We have these dates set aside for the Relay for Life event in Letterkenny. It will be quite the event and I know that many of you will be looking to it, as I do so put it into your calender now.
“Please God, without Covid and without viruses, we will be glad to be together again,” said Daniel.
