THIS weekend, June 19 to 22, the Donegal Chamber Music Society with support from Donegal Music Education Partnership, Donegal ETB and Donegal County Council will present the 5th Annual Cello Meeting Ireland with Romanian/Irish cellist Mihai Dancila as Artistic Director.
This national gathering of cellists started in 2009 and has become an annual focal event, in which cello players of all levels from all around the country gather together in Donegal each June.
The playing standard of the participants has increased each year attracting young players from Cork, Tipperary, Dublin, Ballymena, Ballyshannon and Letterkenny to attend the Master Classes and to perform at the weekend concerts.
The cello weekend will be based at the Finn Valley Centre for Education, Stranorlar, bringing to the county a variety of musical events.
Cello Meeting Ireland will feature master classes in cello, chamber music and cello ensemble while also providing performance opportunities through participation in the concerts.
The Donegal Chamber Orchestra is participating once again this year, and will be performing at the closing concert on Sunday, with a programme of music by Bartok, Respighi and Tchaikovsky. Selected participants of Cello Ireland will also have the opportunity to play as soloists with the chamber orchestra in Conwal Parish Church.
