THE manufacturer of diabetes medication, Abbott is expanding their workforce in Donegal creating 500 jobs. The Donegal News can reveal that the jobs will be created over the next few years with the company, based near Donegal Town, also expanding their manufacturing in the US.
A Spokesperson for Abbott said yesterday: “Due to the expansion of the existing manufacturing facility, we are currently working on expanding our workforce in Donegal. This expansion will bring around 500 new jobs to the site over the next few years. We’re also expanding manufacturing in the U.S.”
A definite timeline on the expansion was not given but the company said this is a “multi-year project”. Currently Abbott Ireland employees approximately 3,000 employees across nine sites including Clonmel, Cootehill, Dublin, Longford and Sligo. The US healthcare group opened their plant in Donegal in 2006, manufacturing blood glucose monitoring strips.
Worldwide Abbott has 74,000 employees and operates in more than 150 countries. The company has seen an increase in demand for their products given the ageing populations and rising obseity levels. When they opened in 2006, with the support of the IDA , the company invested €36 million.
