Donegal Minister Joe McHugh has announced that seven community groups in the country are to share €277,000 worth of grants, with Donegal getting the second largest allocation.
Social enterprise groups in Malin Head, Carndonagh, Termon, Lifford, Killybegs, Pettigo and Drimarone are to receive fundind from the Dormant Accounts Fund.
Minister McHugh said: “I am pleased to be able to confirm today the allocation of €277,717 from the Dormant Accounts Fund to support seven social enterprises in their work in helping Donegal communities, creating jobs and providing enhanced services to those most in need. This fund targets social enterprises in Donegal which provide services or jobs in rural areas of the county.
“Social enterprises play an important role in supporting local communities, in promoting social inclusion, and in helping those who are most distant from the labour market.”
The Minister continued: “I want to commend those involved in these groups in Donegal.
“I am pleased for all of them, including An Craoibhin in Termon, Colgan Centre in Carndonagh, the LATCH project in Lifford, Drimarone Community Development, Malin Head Community Association, the Foresters Community Hall in Killybegs and Pettigo Development.
“An Craoibhin will receive €68,400, the LATCH tourism group in Lifford is to get €81,900, Malin Head Community Association is to receive €33,051, Drimarone is getting €27,373, the Foresters Hall in Killybegs will receive €19,520, the Colgan Hall group in Carndonagh is getting €26,473 and the Association for the Development of Pettigo is to receive €21,000.
“I want to thank Pobal and Minister Michael Ring in assessing the applications and in helping to identify these projects that can have the greatest impact with the funding available under this scheme. I believe that the projects being funding will play an important role in providing much-needed supports and services to local communities, particularly in rural areas.”
Commenting on the funding for Inishowen, Cllr Bernard McGuinness said: “This is fantastic news for community groups in Malin Head and Carndonagh. This funding is warmly welcomed and will help community groups in rural areas providing services to the local area.”
Commenting on funding for the old courthouse project in Lifford, Cllr Martin Harley said: “Ths funding of more than €80,000 is on top of €215,000 announced for the same project in Lifford in February. I am delighted that this important resource for the town and its hinterland is to receive this additional funding.”
Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh welcomed the funding for An Craoibhin in Termon, saying: “The community project has a long and distinguished track record in community engagement in the area and I am pleased this Government has recognised that with additional funding today.”
