A JUDGE has ordered that 27 people must appear before the court after they failed to turn up for jury service this week.
Judge Donagh McDonagh made the order at Wednesday’s sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court after the people ignored summonses to attend.
An angry Judge McDonagh directed the County Registrar to issue summonses, through the local Garda Superintendent, in order to bring the non-attendees to court to explain their actions and to see if there would be ‘any sanctions’ made against them.
He said there were nine and 18 ‘no shows’ respectively for the two jury panels.
“There were 27 people who ignored summonses and I have never come across such a high number of no shows before. These people will be given an opportunity to appear before the court in order to explain their absence,” Judge McDonagh said.
According to the Constitution of Ireland, every citizen aged 18 years or upwards whose name is on the Register of Dáil electors can be called for jury service.
