RESIDENTS are demanding action be taken after a car overturned on a notoriously dangerous corner on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

The accident on Monday around 4pm at Black’s Bridge’, on the busy Glencar Road, is reported to be the 22nd at the location in the past four years.

Speaking to the Donegal News, local residents, warned it was only a matter of time before somebody was killed on the road.

They have lobbied the town council for ramps and other safety works to slow traffic but while some remedial works have been carried out, they feel not enough is being done to avert the danger.

Jarlath Duffy, a father of three, is one of the local resident who is frustrated by the lack of efforts by the council to make the area safer.

“I’ve counted 22 accidents in this area over the past four years. Exactly, a week earlier I was walking with the kids where this car flipped over on its roof. If something is not done, there is going to be a fatality,” he said.

“I raised the issue with the council and local public representatives and they came back to say they had plans to paint 60kph markings on the road. They might as well paint Mickey Mouse on the road because it will do nothing to slow cars down,”

“I’ve lost count of the number of cars I’ve seen losing control at this corner. Ramps need to be placed on the approach to slow cars down. It is a busy road close to the Gaelscoil and a lot of people walk their kids to and from school. Many others walk an jog in the area,” he added.

The young man who was driving the car escaped without serious injuries, but has wounds to his hands. A relative said he was lucky to be alive.
