THE funeral has taken place of Susan Hamilton, the Manorcunningham woman who has been remembered for her kind and tender heart.
Ms Hamilton (74), tragically lost her life when the car she was driving collided with a van at Bunlin Bridge, Milford last Friday.
A native of Inch Island, her requiem Mass took place on Friday morning in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Inch Island.
The service was led by Chief Celebrant Fr Paddy Baker, who was joined by Fr Martin Cunningham, Parish Priest of Drumoghill.
Addressing the congregation, Fr Baker said Ms Hamilton’s sudden passing caused widespread shock and disbelief.
“A sudden death brings a lot of pain and heartache to family and friends who care so much, as they did for Susan,” he said.
“In these last few days before the funeral Mass, I have heard so much praise about Susan.
“It is testimony to the fact so many people have gathered here this morning.
“Susan was so much loved and well got by so many people.”
An Inishowen woman at heart, Susan had been living in Manorcunningham for several years with her late husband Joseph, and their family.
“Susan came here often, to Inch,” Fr Bradley said.
“She never forgot her roots.
“She was always very proud to be from Inch.
“She came here with her family and friends to pray at the grotto and there, Susan and her family received great consolation and tremendous peace.”
Fr Baker described Ms Hamilton as a “good person”, and spoke of her “very kind” and “very tender” heart.
“She was a person who simply cared about people, who cared deeply about the other person and less about herself,” he said.
“She was a loyal wife to her late husband Joseph, a loving mother to her four girls, her extended family and to her grandchildren, a great neighbour and a trusted, worthy friend.”
During the Mass, Ms Hamilton’s grandchildren brought forward symbolic gifts that represented her life.
The gifts included two birds to show her love of nature, a CD for her love of music and dancing, a statue of Our Lady to reflect her strong faith, her word search and bingo books, and gift bags to show how much she loved giving to others.
After Mass, interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.
Ms Hamilton is predeceased by her husband, Joseph, brother, James and her parents, James and Jeannie.
She will be forever missed by her loving daughters, Joanne (Mickey), Amanda (Gerard), Rachel (Kevin), Lisa (Stephen) and her ten grandchildren, Kayla, Joseph, Jack, Jessica, Ciara, Leighton, Jamie, Eoghan, Lily and Michael.
