THE canvassing has begun in earnest ahead of the Donegal GAA Convention in five weeks time.
While the deadline for nominations passed on Friday last, the candidates for each of the positions have yet to be declared.
However, with Grace Boyle (Treasurer) and Jim Quinn (PRO) confirming that they are stepping down from their respective positions there is already keen interest in those two positions.
Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday Ms Boyle said that she was “delighted” that Cieran Kelly (St Naul’s) had declared an interest in taking on the treasurer’s role.
“Cieran is the chairman of Club Tír Chonaill and I’m happy to move on knowing that someone so capable would be prepared to take on the job.
“I don’t want to walk away completely as I would like to see the Convoy project through to fruition and, as a result, I’ll seek an Ulster Council post,” she said.
The two Ulster Council delegates Pat Conaghan and Brendan Kelly are both expected to allow their names to go forward for the position this time around while the name of Referees Administrator Pat Walsh is also in the mix.
“There will be stiff competition I know but I won’t walk away from the Convoy project ,” Ms Boyle added.
Brendan Kelly was joined by three other newcomers at the top table last time around – chairman Sean Dunnion, vice chairman Danny McNamee and PRO Jim Quinn.
The Glenfin man, who took over from Máire Graham and has just completed his first year as Public Relations Officer, won’t be allowing his name to go forward this time around.
“It’s a demanding position, with a big workload, and one which would be more suitable for someone who is either unemployed or self employed. Unfortunately, I cannot give it the commitment that is required,” he said.
Sean Dunnion who became the 42nd occupant of the Donegal GAA Chairman’s seat in 2012 has confirmed that he will seek another term.
Elsewhere, Ardara’s Edward Molloy who’s name was absent from the executive this year for the first time since 1992 has been nominated as Vice Chair and Assistant Secretary.
This year, following a direction from Croke Park, all votes will be conducted under the PR system.
The 2013 convention will take place in the Mount Errigal Hotel on Sunday, December 15.
“It will be a few days yet before I will release the nominations,” County Secretary Aodh Máirtín Ó Fearraigh said yesterday.
