DONEGAL businessman Tim Kelly is set to be honoured with the Freedom of the County at a celebration in Lifford this Friday.
A year after he was awarded the prestigious Freedom of the City of London, Mr Kelly will be afforded another major honour at the Civic Reception in County House.
The Frosses native is chairman of the London based Kelly Group, a major player in the telecommunications business across the UK where it employs over 3,500 people.
At July’s monthly meeting of Donegal County Council, Cathaoirleach Cllr Martin Harley proposed the civic honour.
“The Kellys have been brilliant. When you think of the amount of work they have provided for people from Donegal and the border counties, I think it’s important that Tim’s contribution is recognised,” Cllr Harley said.
“We have honoured sports people in the past and people from music and entertainment, but it’s also very important to recognise the diaspora and the part they have played in the lives of so many Donegal people.”
For Cllr. Harley, the award presentation which will take place later this year, will be extra special. Like Mr Kelly, the Ballybofey representative is a native of Frosses and his father and mother were Mr. Kelly’s godparents.
