Houses in Raphoe to proceed but will be delayed

Donegal County Council has confirmed the housing development in Raphoe which has been paused due to the developer going into administration will be completed.

Construction of 11 homes in Meadow Hill, Raphoe paused in December as it was revealed the developer has gone into administration.

The Council has confirmed the work on the estate will proceed but the remainder of the work will be delayed as it will have to be resubmitted for tender.

At Monday’s meeting of Donegal County Council, Cllr Frank McBrearty asked council officials for an update on the situation. Raising the issue, he said he had previously asked for a special council meeting on the housing development but the meeting was not held.

Director of Housing, Corporate & Cultural Services Patsy Lafferty confirmed the contractor on the project has gone into administration.

“The contractor previously would have completed a number of projects for us in different parts of the county.

“The administrator has been appointed and the Council is working with the administrator to have the project completed in conjunction with the department. The outstanding work will have to be re-tendered and progressed until it is completed.

“The project will be completed but obviously the situation that has arisen will delay it somewhat. It is unfortunate for the builder concerned,” said Mr Lafferty.

In response Cllr McBrearty said the response was evasive and did not deal with the issues that had arisen.

“This is a development that is very much needed for the people of the Raphoe.

“One major question that needs to be answered is how the contractor got through the procurement and tendering process set down for entry to get the job in the first place,” said Cllr McBrearty.

Mr Lafferty said the process of procurement of the company was the normal procurement process and it is unfortunate that the builder has gone into administration.
