Clubs urged to nominate members for Volunteers in Sport

Donegal community groups, sports clubs, and voluntary organisations are being encouraged to get involved in the 2022 Federation of Irish Sport’s Volunteers in Sports Awards.
Speaking ahead of the entry deadline of Wednesday, February 5th, Donegal Sports Partnership Coordinator, Myles Sweeney, spoke of the importance of recognising volunteerism in sport in Donegal.
“Volunteerism is the backbone of sporting organisations throughout Donegal country. Donegal Sports Partnership is encouraging those involved with local groups, clubs, and organisations to nominate an individual who they feel merits recognition by completing the short online form,” he commented.
“It’s the volunteers who make things happen – from taking charge of training sessions and managing teams to maintaining playing pitches, training facilities and clubhouses. Without our volunteers, so many things in so many areas simply wouldn’t happen.”
Mr. Sweeney explained that the Federation of Irish Sport has been able to reintroduce the Volunteers in Sports Awards because of the support of the national network of 29 Local Sports Partnership.
Nationally, around 450,000 people act as volunteers on a weekly basis to help the 13,000 sports clubs. The estimated economic value of volunteering in Ireland is worth €1.5bn to the Irish economy.

Nominations received will be shortlisted and put forward for consideration by a judging panel. Winners will be chosen on a county basis, with 32 award recipients and one overall outstanding volunteer award.
The Federation of Irish Sport hosts the Volunteers in Sport Awards as a unique celebration to honour and recognise individuals who are part of the wider volunteering community involved in sport, and who give freely of their time and efforts in a variety of ways through the structure of sports clubs and/or community organisations.
