Teachers and SNAs gear up for sportshall athletics

A group of 34 local primary school teachers and special needs assistants attended a workshop at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny ahead of the Donegal Primary Schools’ Sportshall Athletics Programme.
The programme makes a welcome return next month after a four-year break because of the pandemic.
The session was delivered by Donegal Sports Partnership Coordinator, Myles Sweeney, and Athletics Ireland National Development Club Officer, Dermot McGranaghan.
The participants were given a thorough run-through of the various events pupils will be taking part in, with the rules and guidelines explained to them in detail.
The Donegal Primary Schools’ Sportshall Athletics Programme is coordinated by Donegal Sports Partnership, Donegal Athletics County Board, Athletics Ireland and the local athletics clubs.
Sportshall athletics is based on a team format which provides opportunities for children to participate in running, throwing and jumping events which are the fundamentals for movement.
“The workshop went extremely well and there was great interest from the teachers and special needs assistant. It was nice to see some familiar faces again, while it was also encouraging to see new teachers and special needs assistants leading out on the sportshall programme in their respective schools,” Mr Sweeney commented.
“It’s great to be looking forward to the sportshall events after such a long break – it’s hard to believe that the last event was held in 2019. The focus on all the sportshall events will be on fun and enjoyment, and making sure the children have a positive experience in a safe environment,” he added.
