If you’re planning a night out in January, consider adding a bit of sparkle to your fashion and makeup looks to help stand out on these dark winter nights.
January 2023 is all about gold, on both the body and face. The brilliant thing about gold is that it lends itself to both subtle, and more over the top looks. You have the option of matte gold, glitter gold, or even sequin gold. The most important thing, whatever you choose, is that you like it and you have fun with it. Makeup and fashion should be enjoyable to use, wear, and buy.
When it comes to clothing, think sequins, feathers, tassels, and fur (fake or vintage preferably). Versace’s winter collection featured latex boots and metallic skirts, Gucci favoured corsets, and Tom Ford opted for tailoring and velvet. All these looks have now filtered into the High Street where you can take your pick of lush, luxe couture – inspired fashion.
Don’t forget about charity shops when looking for sparkle. I found a wonderful Grecian – style pleated, gold dress for £4 in a charity shop in Derry. I wear it with gold sequin boots and a gold spiked headpiece I made out of left – over Christmas decorations. If you have a special occasion like a winter wedding to attend, there are also a number of online Irish businesses where you can rent designer dresses at very reasonable rates. After a quick online search I found designer occassion wear dresses available for as little as €15 a day.
In makeup it’s all about the glow and glitter. My current go-to shimmer eyeshadow is the Clarins ombre four – colour eyeshadow palette. The set contains a matte, satin, shimmer and glitter shadow. The colours are enriched with bamboo powder which doubles as a primer and helps the eyeshadow to stay on long after other products have faded away. The Clairns palette creates a more subtle gold look but for something with more sparkle, Bobbi Brown, Urban Decay, and Barry M all offer excellent gold eyeshadow pallettes.
For dewy, glowy skin my favourite product is Benefit’s High Beam. A few tiny drops of this illuminator on the cheeks and inner eyes provides instant luminescence.
If you’re creating an impactful gold eye then opt for a softer, matte lipstick to complete your look. I’ve been testing out Lancome’s Impertinence L’Absolu Rouge Drama lipstick which is a warm dark pink-coral. While many matte lipsticks can leave lips feeling and looking dry, this one feels much nicer to wear. When I tested it I didn’t need to reapply it for six hours, so it has great staying power.
With gold there is something for all styles and budgets, the other great thing about gold is it’s flattering on every skin colour. If you’re nervous about wearing it, start small. Try a gold scarf, gold nail polish, or a smudge of gold eyeshadow blended into light brown shadow. Play around with it and have fun.
