Coroner finds ‘misadventure’ in crash deaths

A coroner has ruled that the deaths of three young people in a road traffic accident near Letterkenny four years ago was due to “misadventure.”

An inquest today into the three fatalities heard that the head-on crash involved two vehicles and all the victims knew each other.

Teresa Robinson (20) of Dromore, Killygordon; Kaylem Murphy (19) of Cloghan Mor, Cloghan, and Steven McCafferty of Hillview, Lismonaghan, Letterkenny, were all killed instantly as a result of the crash in the early hours of July 28th, 2016, at Coravaddy, Drumkeen. A fourth person involved in the accident, Sean Ward of Hilltop, Stranorlar, survived but was unable to attend today’s inquest due to ill health.

The crash occurred at a blind crest on the road and involved a maroon Toyota Avensis and a blue Peugeot 306.

After hearing depositions from Gardai, medical personnel and family members, coroner Denis McCauley ruled that the deaths were due to “misadventure” with 80% of it due to accident and the rest because of action taken that “would have increased the chances of an accident happening.”

Extending condolences to all the families, he said the three young people were all having a normal day and had plans for the day and for the rest of their lives but those plans were now gone.

I can only imagine the heartbreak for the families,” he said.
