A teenager has put on hold a promising football career to pursue a life in music.
Rio Rainz has just released his second single ‘Heartless’ which has brought him firmly on to the radar of two major recording companies in London.
Rio’s family hails from the townland of Casheleenan and the teenager regularly returns to Donegal to visit his relatives.
His new single is attracting substantial airplay in both the UK and Australia.
“Deferring my football career was a big decision because I have great coaches at Cambridge United. But I feel I must do my A levels which I would not be able to do with the club.”
Rio was spotted by Arsenal FC at six years of age and taken into their academy as a goalkeeper. His footballing career moved on and since the age of 12 he has been in the elite squad at Cambridge Utd playing against other professional clubs from the English Football League.
Always in the background though was his music and from his early years, Rio has attended Performing Art School in London.
In 2019, he was named ‘Voice of the Future’ by celebrity vocal coach couple David and Carrie Grant. He has since performed on stage with their daughter and Hollyoaks star Talia.
“Rio has been writing his own songs from an early age,” says a spokesperson.
“He has released two singles to date and his latest, Heartless, is a deep song reflecting on inner emotions that many of his listeners connect with.
“Rio is creative with his lyrics and his work portrays life as a young person in these modern fast-moving times.”
Rio told the Donegal News that he is still only at the beginning of his creative journey.
“I am in the early stages of sharing my work and I have a wide range of projects to follow.”
