ONE of the north west’s most  popular entertainers is gearing up to celebrate his 72nd birthday in style with a huge charity concert this weekend.
Leslie Matthews, who lives in St Johnston, is hosting the musical extravaganza in the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny on Friday night.
As is the case with most of Leslie’s endeavours, the concert will raise money for charity, namely the Donegal Hospice.
Doors for ‘Leslie Matthews big 70 + 2 birthday concert’ will open at 7.15pm with the showpiece getting underway at 8pm sharp.
Well-known throughout Donegal and beyond, Leslie has raised thousands of euros for charity over the last decade.
Helping him celebrate his birthday at the event will be 14-year-old Owen Mac and his father, Desi Mac, from Coleraine, Strabane’s Patsy Harte and 17-year-old talent, Jamie Donnelly.
Providing all the music on the night will be the fantastic Ryan Turner Band.
Speaking this week, as he makes final preparations for the showpiece event, Mr Matthews said, “Everyone is welcome. Admission is €10 or £10.”
The charitable local man has raised more than €62,000 for the Donegal Hospice since 2006.
Over £80,000 has been raised for Cancer Research/MS in Northern Ireland since 2003.
“I am deeply appreciative of the wonderful support the people of Tyrone, Donegal and elsewhere have given me these past 14 years,” Leslie added.
