Plans to restore run down apartments welcomed

The apartment block on Letterkenny’s Port Road which could be transformed under plans that have just been lodged with Donegal County Council.

PLANS to restore the run down apartment complex on the Port Road in Letterkenny have been welcomed.

Dublin based company Nikki Developments LTD lodged plans with Donegal County Council last week.

The planning application sought to change the use of the building from 15 student apartment units and one caretaker/security office into 16 residential units.

The application was however deemed incomplete by the Local Authority.

The premises was originally due to go under the hammer at an action last October however, after a delay because of legal reasons the building was eventually sold at an auction held by property agency O’Donnellan and Joyce Auctioneers last December.

The guide price was €300,000 and the auctioneer warned that refurbishment was needed.

The apartment block was originally built in 2005 but fell into disrepair in recent years.

Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh (Ind) welcomed the progress on the building and said it had been an eye sore in the town for years.

“It is good news. The building was very badly run down and was an eye sore,” he said.

“It is good that it will be used again for accommodation. Accommodation is so badly needed.”
