Death of Gaoth Dobhair GAA and golf stalwart

The death occurred at his home in Stramartin, Derrybeg on Monday morning of Michael Mhicí Gallagher who was well known in GAA and Golf circles. Aged 88 years, he passed away after an illness. A true GAA man he was a loyal and ardent follower and supporter of the Gaoth Dobhair and county team for over seventy years. He was President of the Gaoth Dobhair Club at the time of his death. He was a former referee, team selector and committee man. He was gifted with an amazing knowledge of the glory years of Gaoth Dobhair teams. He had remarkable recollection of incidents, events, games, controversies and heroes.
He was equally dedicated and supportive of the Gaoth Dobhair Golf Club. He served as President of the club 2001 and again in 2002. Golf was an important part of his life. If he was not in the Golf Club House, he would be in the GAA Clubhouse up the road. He had a great interest in the club that had been an important part of his life. He gave a long and dedicated time to both sports and he will be sorely missed.
His funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Derrybeg at 11am on Wednesday with his interment afterwards in Magheragallon Cemetery. Predeceased by his parents, and brothers, John and Hughie, he is survived by his twin brother, Jimmy, sister-in-law, Bríd Gallagher, family circle and relatives. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
