At the National Youth Cycling Championship in Westport, Co. Mayo at the weekend young Gaoth Dobhair cyclist, Adam McGeever, Knockastolar, Bunbeg won gold in all three events at the championship, making him three time Irish champion.
Adam who is a son Con and Leigh McGeever competed in the u-11 age group in three categories. The first one on Saturday was a Time Trial 8k and this was followed by a Road Race. The final event was a Criterium around the streets in the centre of Westport on Sunday morning.
Adam is part of AAA Cycling Youth Academy. The club is based on the Gaoth Dobhair Industrial Estate and they coach kids from 9 to 14 years every Monday night from 6 to 7p.m. and from 7 to 8p.m. This club can provide bikes for beginners. Adam’s coaches are Peter McBride and Conor McIllwaine.
His father, Con is originally from Gortahork while his mum, Leigh a member of the McFadden family hails from Knockastolar. He is a pupil in Scoil Phádraig, Dobhar. Adam is also a talented footballer and is a member of the Gweedore Celtic under age team.
His proud father Con said the family are over the moon with Adam’s outstanding performance in Westport at the weekend. He said he has been cycling from the tender age of six years. He added that the family spent time living in Australia and Adam continued to cycle and train during the time spent there. He paid glowing tribute to his two coaches, Peter McBride and Conor McIllwaine and described them as two professional coaches who are very good at their job. A very promising and dedicated young cyclist no doubt young McGeever will be making the headlines for many years to come.
