Mother and child forced to return to Australia

Women in distress WEB

AN online campaign has been launched to support a young woman and her young child stranded and homeless in Australia.

The daughter of a Buncrana native had initially fled Australia and returned to Ireland with her toddler son, who was born here, but was forced to return.

The child’s father took her to court under The Hague Convention and an order was made compelling her to return the child to the country they had fled.

The woman, who is a native of Derry, and her son are currently homeless as they wait for legal proceedings, which have prevented her from being named, to begin.

It is understood the young mother has been told that she is not entitled to benefits or free legal aid, is not allowed to work and meanwhile her savings have run out.

People can donate to the fund being managed by Foyle Women’s Aid at Danske Bank Sort Code: 950676 Account Number: 30006513 Derry people who may be able to offer support in Australia can do so by contacting Foyle Women’s Aid on 028 7141 6800.

Follow the campaign on Facebook, search ‘Give to Sarah’.
