MEMBERS of the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team were horrified to discover rubbish, including asbestos sheeting, illegally dumped on Lough Salt Mountain.

Four members of the rescue service were out on exercise on Sunday afternoon when they came on the illegal dump site where bottle tops and other waste items, possibly from a bar, had been dumped.

One member of the group said it was awful to see that people had such disregard for the environment.

“It is possible that this waste was brought up here in a van – why when they drove this far, did they not go the rest of the distance to Milford where there is an amenity site. It could have been disposed of properly.

“Anyone who was out walking in the area could have come on it. It is not far from the Wild Atlantic Way which will encourage more walkers here. It is a travesty they should have to see the likes of this,” the spokesperson said.

Donegal County Council have been made aware of the illegal dumping.

“Procurement is underway to deliver improvements to the site and works will commence as soon as possible.”
