Donegal Youth Council to hold agenda day event

WHAT issue is currently most important to young people aged 12-18 in Donegal? That’s the question that will be answered at today’s Donegal Youth Council Agenda Day, which takes place in the Clannree Hotel in Letterkenny and gets underway from 10.30am.

The Donegal Youth Council, which is made up of young people from all across the county, will welcome 150 young people to the event from over 26 different schools, Youthreach centres and youth projects tomorrow to put forward youth issues, participate in facilitated discussions and then propose and vote on issues they would like to see the Youth Council work on during the next year. The top 5 issues identified will form the work plan for the incoming Youth Council, but there will also be a vote to determine the number one priority issue.

The event for the Youth Council will also mark the end of term for the 2012-2014 Donegal Youth Council where they will present to the audience the progress they have made in relation to identified topics from the previous AGM, while the day will see the newly elected Donegal Youth Council presented before their peers for the first time also. The audience will also be addressed by Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council John Campbell.

Outgoing Chairperson of the Donegal Youth Council, Shane Hegarty from Stranorlar, says it will be a sad but proud day for their group. “We have had a fantastic two years and have completed a number of projects we are very proud of, including the likes of our European award winning SPARKS roadshow, the SHAM Sexual Health website and LGBT Stand Up in Schools project. We look forward to welcoming the new Youth Council into their roles and to share our experience with them also.”

Donegal Youth Council is funded by Donegal County Council, HSE Health Promotion and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and aims to provide young people with opportunities to identify, prioritise and work on topics and projects which have been identified by the wider youth population of the county and also to provide young people with opportunities to have their voice heard by being involved in the development of local services and policies which affect them.

Donegal Youth Council is co-ordinated by the Donegal Youth Service. For more information you can contact Donegal Youth Council Co-ordinator Marty Keeney on 087-6806676 or email
