SEAMUS Coleman has nailed down his spot as the Republic of Ireland’s first-choice right-back – and, after a Man of the Match performance on Wednesday night against Greece, the Killybegs man received a ringing endorsement from Irish boss Giovanni Trapattoni.
Ireland’s 2012 ended in a mundane 1-0 defeat to Greece before a sparsely populated Aviva Stadium, but the performance of Coleman was one of the real bright sparks on the night.
Now finally deployed in his favoured position on the right side of defence, Coleman’s defensive duties were conducted well, while his explosive bursts forward and his combination with Robbie Brady on the right touchline were a real source of creativity for the Irish – who were beaten by Jose Holebas’ 29th-minute goal.
“Coleman was fantastic, he was the man of the match,” Trapattoni said.
