WELL done to the Letterkenny AC men’s team who retained the Donegal senior cross country title on Sunday at the Karting Centre grounds at Ballymaleel.
Christopher Johnston led the home team to team gold with a strong run to finish 12 seconds ahead of his club mate, Ciaran Doherty in second, with former club man, Pauric McKinney, now running with Inishowen, taking third.
The other four scoring runners were Darren McBrearty (5th), Dan King (9th), Ivan Toner (12th) and Dan Mooney (13th). Providing much needed back up over trying conditions were Paul McGlinchey (15th), John Patton (16th), Sean McFadden (21st), Martin Gormley (28th) and Glen Duncan (31st).
In the women’s race, Fionnuala Diver gave a gutsy performance and was rewarded for her effort when finishing runner-up to Finn Valley’s Teresa McGloin who claimed her fifth senior Donegal title. Third was Lifford AC’s Annmarie Larkin McGlynn.
The club extends its sincere thanks to John Russell for the use of his grounds to stage the event.
Congratulations to club coach, Teresa McDaid, who has been appointed as manager of the Irish Cross Country team for the European Cross Country Championships which take place in Budapest on December 9th. Teresa takes over from Anne Keenan-Buckley who has stood down from the role.
Commenting on the appointment, Athletics Ireland CEO, John Foley, said: “We are delighted that Teresa McDaid has accepted the role of cross country team manager for the European Championships.
“Teresa has vast experience as both a coach and team manager and we have great confidence that she will do an excellent job in leading our team in Budapest.”
This weekend the club will have teams competing in the men’s and women’s Ulster novice cross country championships which will be staged in Killybegs.
The club extends its sympathy to the Winston and Friel families on the sad passing of Elaine Winston at the weekend.
Elaine was a highly respected teacher at the Loreto secondary school and was extremely popular among the students. May she rest in peace.
