Councillors: what they earn and are they worth it?

AS the country faces cuts to HSE services and further tax increases in the budget the Donegal News asked five members of Donegal County Council this week if they would be prepared to give up their remuneration packages.

Once upon a time councillors elected to Donegal County Council and town councils received no payment and put themselves forward for election out of a sense of public service.

This week we have seen how being a county councillor can result in an annual remuneration of more than €65,000 and a handsome gratuity on retirement from the council of around €50,000 (depending on age and time served), even if that means taking up a more lucrative seat in the Dáil or Seanad.
