Garda rejects border 'crime crisis' claims

By C.J.McGinley

A SENIOR garda yesterday (Thursday) refuted claims of a policing crisis in parts of East Donegal.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Superintendent Vincent O’Brien, the garda chief for the Letterkenny Garda Divisional Area, said he was satisfied with the new garda rostering plans, despite a spate of crime in the area over the past week.

“We’ve introduced a new sectoral policing plan for the Lifford, Carrigans and Newtowncunningham areas,” he said.

“I’m satisfied, given the new rostering arrangements, that there is now an improved garda presence in that area,” he added.

Supt O’Brien would not be drawn further on garda manpower levels for ‘operational reasons’.
His comments came after stinging criticism this week from elected representatives, who claim current manpower levels to patrol the area were ‘ridiculous’ since the introduction of the new rostering system in April.
