Freak hail shower hits Termon

RESIDENTS of Termon were shocked on Wednesday to find hailstones, up to four inches in depth in places, lying on the ground following a freak storm.
The localised weather anomaly has been blamed by meteorologists on the convergence of cold and warm air in the area at the time. This produced thunder, lightning and hail. The cold air was at lower levels which kept any ice from changing back to rain.
“Once it accumulates on the ground it produces a “cold shield” which keeps the ice as ice and builds up more and more,” the expert said.
