DONEGAL will be en fete this weekend with St Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day falling together for the first time in living memory.
Parades are taking place in most parishes tomorrow and Sunday with the biggest expected to be in Letterkenny which this year is costing €17,000 to stage.
However the Cathedral Town will get a run for its money from both Glenties and Ardara which have come up with a unique billing: The Leprechauns versus St Patrick.
Enterprising committees have dreamed up two challenges for the Guinness Book of World Records. In Glenties tomorrow (Saturday) they are hoping to break the record for having the most leprechauns in the one place at the one time. The following day in Ardara they are hoping to set a world record for having the most St Patricks on parade. (see page 24)
Meanwhile parades are also taking place in Gweedore, Dungloe, Dunfanaghy, Buncrana, Moville and a host of other venues.
Security is expected to be tight in Letterkenny following the parade, because in previous years the evening has been marred by groups of young people drinking on the street, causing problems.
Hotels and restaurants across the county are expecting a much-needed boost as families celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday and treat mums to a meal out, a welcome break from routine cooking for the family.
Florists and shops selling chocolates as well as those selling perfumes are also hoping to see the economic benefits of grateful families showing their appreciation for mums.
