Cannabis man released but file to DPP

By Deputy Editor, C.J.McGinley

A FILE is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions following a major drugs seizure at a ‘cannabis factory’ in Lettermacaward.

47 cannabis plants with a value of €18,800 euro and cannabis herb valued at €2,500 were seized in the planned raid.

An amount of cash was also discovered in the raid on the house.

The man was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station for questioning following the seizure. A garda spokesman confirmed on Friday he had been released but a file was being prepared for the DPP.

Equipment used in the cultivation of cannabis was also found by gardai.
“We recovered a large consignment of cannabis and an amount of cash. Forensics officers are going through the haul as part of our investigation,” the spokesman said.
“The raid was made as part of an organised operation,” he added.

The latest seizure goes to show the spread of the drugs problem across Donegal in recent years. Despite its remote location this was a significant find.
There are growing fears in the county following reports before Christmas of possible cutbacks to the Garda Drugs Unit.

Last May Gardai discovered €190,000 of herbal cannabis in a house in Buncrana. There is reports of drugs now being freely available in all urban and rural areas of the county. These include Class A drugs such as Cocaine and Heroin along with ecstasy and cannabis.
