‘Waves’ of cross community work continues in Dunfanaghy

THE premiere of six films, five short dramas and a full length documentary made by youth groups from Belfast and Dunfanaghy took place recently.
On Thursday, April 28 the films which were part of the The Waves of Change” project were premiered at Farset International, in Belfast.
The youth groups involved were, Tullycarnet Youth Club, from East Belfast and the Corpus Christi Youth Club, from Ballymurphy Road, West Belfast and the Waves of Change Youth Group based in The Workhouse, Dunfanaghy.
Dunfanaghy based Project Officer, Gabriel Doherty said: “Although the project has been running for some time, this is the first time we have had an event involving all three groups and their families.
“We wanted to bring the young participants and their families together with something positive to celebrate. The film project had two distinct elements which worked very well.
“The young people had a one week residential film camp, at the Ulster American Folk Park, and made five short films based on emigration stories they researched at the Centre for Migration Studies. The second element of the film project then had the young people making a documentary exploring their own communities which allowed them to gain a real insight into each other’s lives.  It was very rewarding to see young people from such different communities and backgrounds working together so well and achieving something so positive.”
The Project Co-ordinator, Sian McCann, said: ‘This film Camp gave the participants the opportunity to spend time together getting to know each other and establish friendships.
“This is a three year cross community and cross border project so there is plenty of time for the young people to get to know each other,” she said.
Waves Of Change is being funded by Peace III, The International Fund for Ireland and The Anne Brown Trust.
